SEEK OUT Wakulla

E-mail Print PDF

SEEK OUT WAKULLA is an optional program of activities developed for parents and families of SEEK participants who choose to stay in the area while their student attends the 4-day SEEK Conference.

Wakulla County is situated between Tallahassee and Panama City Beach and offers a plethora of natural attractions.  We are at the east end of the “Forgotten Coast” along the Big Bend National Scenic Byway.  Over 70% of the county is undeveloped, pristine public lands and 85% of the coastline is wild and natural.  The wonders of Wakulla -  rivers and springs, forests and woodlands, wildlife encounters with flora and fauna, paddling, biking and paddling trails -all await your discovery!

The neighboring counties of Franklin to our west and Jefferson to our east similarly offer picturesque rivers, woods, small communities, and a journey back to simpler times where traffic lights are few and far between, but roadside stands piled high with locally grown vegetables and tupelo honey are common.

SEEKWhile your student attends the SEEK Conference and learns to "Save the Earth's Environment through Knowledge" with hands-on workshops, activities and field trips, consider learning about our area with some of your own fun activities.  Browse our listings of tours and activities which can be arranged to fit your schedule during your stay of both Session I and Session II. We are also happy to suggest to you many things to do and see in our area.

Please contact us with your suggestions if you don’t see something you like and we will be happy to make special arrangements to fit your needs.

LODGING

We have arranged with the Inn at Wildwood and the Best Western Wakulla Inn & Suites for a discount off the advertised rates. Please mention “Palmetto Expeditions” when making your reservations to be eligible for the SEEK OUT WAKULLA discount.  Please inquire about our charming historic Bed & Breakfast Inn located in St. Marks, FL.

SHOPPING/RESTAURANTS

Yes, we do have a Wal-Mart, McDonald's, and a Winn Dixie, but we are lucky to have what so many other communities have already lost.  The "small town" merchant is alive and well in Wakulla County and our surrounding area, and further adds to our authenticity.  You will find unique gift shops, restaurants, and businesses in each of our communities run by local folks who take pride in what they do.  During your visit, plan to spend some time poking around our county and see what you can find.

SEEK CONFERENCE

SEEK (Save the Earth's Environment through Knowledge) is an annual environmental conference for high school students sponsored by the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs.  Each summer, 70 students from across the state attend the outstanding 4-day conference.  Students entering grades 10, 11, or 12 are eligible to attend.  The 2012 SEEK Conference will be held at the Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park located in Wakulla County just south of Tallahassee.  Participants will be housed in the historic Wakulla Springs Lodge surrounded by lush natural vegetation, built on the edge of the world's largest and deepest freshwater spring.
