Often thought to be a Florida Pink Flamingo when viewed from a distance, these unique birds found throughout the Caribbean, and the southern Gulf states, feed by sweeping their spatulate shaped open mandibills back and forth through the bay waters in search of minnows and especially shrimp that contain carotene, which in turn gives them and Flamingos their pink color. In Wakulla County, they have been spotted in the wildlife refuge and in the Panacea area, near Otter Lake and Mashes Sands. |
